DIY All Natural Sunscreen
I am sure you already know a lot about the importance of sun protection. But do you know that most over the counter sunscreen can do more harm to our bodies than the sun itself? Chemicals like oxybenzone, octocrylene and retinyl palmitate (commonly used in sunscreen formulations) are suspected to be strong endocrine disruptors, meaning they alter the way your hormones function. Not cool.
Even though we are aware that formulating a good sunscreen requires some serious knowledge of chemistry, we also know that nature has some good alternatives to offer. If you are not going to the beach, to spend the entire day there, hence you don’t need ultra-strong protection, you might as well make your own sunscreen, using all natural ingredients that are good for your skin and for your body.
The Recipe
- 3 tbs Hempseed Oil
- 3 tbs Coconut Oil
- 2 tbs Vitamin E Oil
- 20 drops Carrot Seed Oil
- 1 tbs Zinc Oxide
Mix all ingredients in a container with a tap (use a mask when adding the zinc oxide, to avoid inhaling it). Shake the mixture for a few minutes, in order to homogenize it well.
Since determining the SPF of a product is not done by summing up the SPF of all individual ingredients used in the formulation, it would be very unprofessional if we tell you that this lotion will have SPF 35, let’s say. Apart from that, the SPF natural oils have can vary (example: Carrot Seed Oil’s SPF is 35-40).
What I want to say is: This is not a tested-in-a-lab formulation. Still, it’s way better compared to most full-of-toxic-chemicals lotions, available on the market, that threaten to damage your health.
How To Use It
The first and the most important thing is to always shake really well the container where you store your homemade lotion, before applying it on your skin. Since Zinc Oxide is relatively heavy it’s highly likely it will precipitate at the bottom of the bottle.
When it comes to how much to apply, the rules are the following:
One tablespoon of the product should be applied evenly on your face and neck. If your décolletage is exposed to the sun, apply another tablespoon to make sure it’s protected as well (the skin there is very delicate and prone to forming wrinkles, don’t forget that).
If you sweat a lot, re-apply every 2-3 hours. When you go back home, cleanse your skin, as per usual, since oils can trap impurities and just like makeup, needs to be removed at the end of the day.

The Benefits
The structure of hempseed oil closely resembles the one of the natural body lipids, making it ideal for restoring damaged skin, healing tissues and maintaining the integrity of skin’s hydro-lipid barrier. Thanks to its high content of essential fatty acids, Hempseed oils is a great pick for people struggling with eczema, dermatitis and other skin conditions, associated with dryness, redness and frequent irritation. Hempseed oil has SPF 6.
Coconut oil smells ah-mazing (yes, for me this is a huge benefit!), moisturizes in depth and leaves the skin super soft and hydrated. It is easily absorbed, which is important having in mind you’ll be using the sunscreen during the day. Coconut oil has SPF 4-6.
Though vitamin E doesn’t have SPF, it is a powerful antioxidant that protects the living cells from free radicals - primary cause for premature aging and the appearance of aging spots. Vitamin E improves skin’s elasticity and firmness and supports new cell growth. Last but not least, it acts as natural preservative i.e. your lotion will be good for use for at least 4 months.

Carrot seed oil nourishes and rejuvenates the skin and at the same time reduces the appearance of dark spots (often caused by excess sun exposure), thanks to its strong antioxidant properties. Carrot seed oil has SPF 35-40.
Zinc oxide is one of the most popular ingredients, used in the formulation of the so called mineral sunscreen (along with Titanium Dioxide). It’s a broad spectrum physical sun block, meaning it protects from both UVA and UVB rays.
Note: Make sure that the zinc oxide that you purchase is micronized (not nano-sized and non-coated!). You can learn more about the dangers of nanoparticles here.
The best thing about this lotion is that is 100% natural. Nevertheless, since essential oils are very concentrated, we recommend testing the product on a small area of skin first. If in the next 24 hours you don’t get burning/itchy sensation or redness, you can go ahead and enjoy your all-natural-made-at-home sun protective lotion! Go out and get your daily dose of vitamin D!
