How To Make Your Kitchen Toxic-Free (with Brooke Glew)
Today, we have an expert on board! Brooke Glew from the Health Coach Army (who we interviewed a few weeks ago) will share with you her tips on the how to make your kitchen greener and cleaner!
We are exposed to over 200 industrial pollutants every single day, and a recent study showed that women spritz and rub an average of 126 chemicals on them before they leave the house in the morning. These stats are shocking, but they’re also overwhelming for many. Most people know that they’re exposed to toxins in the products they use and the food they eat, but they just don’t know where to start to reduce, and what alternatives are on the market. The good news is there are incredible brands out there, making beautiful natural products that work and have health benefits. If you’re reading this article, you’re probably aware, or at least interested in becoming aware, of the chemicals you’re exposed to and how to reduce them. I want to congratulate you for taking the step to not only change the way you look and feel, but also for your contribution to changing the generations to come. The more we are educated and demand products that are not toxic, the more we encourage healthy people throughout our country and our world.
Get to the Kitchen Brooke!
Ok, ok, intro (rant) over. The Kitchen is a very important, if not the most important room in your house. Every person, every family member, every loved one will be in your kitchen. Any products that you use in this important room, end up being ingested through food and drinks. Cleaning products will be absorbed into your food, cooking equipment and food storage will leach into your food, and the food itself will end up in your blood stream. So let’s break it down.
The Pantry And The Fridge
This is where all of our food is stored, this area of your kitchen is all about working your way through the food that you’re feeding yourself and your family, and start to opt for healthier options, wholefood options. The chemicals hiding in our food are many, but once we start to recognize them and realize that there’s a simple alternative to what we’re eating, the lifestyle shift becomes second nature. Some general rules in your pantry and fridge are:
1. Avoid the Numbers. Numbers are indicative of chemicals. Ones like 621 (Monosodium Glutamate), 951 (Aspartame), 202 (Sulphite); plus many, many more.
2. Go for small ingredient lists, the less ingredients the better.
3. If there’s an ingredient that you don’t know what it is, don’t buy it.
4. Choose foods that are close to their natural state.
The Cooking Equipment
As I mentioned above, what we cook in, can leach into our food and then we eat it. Some cooking equipment, specifically pots and pans and oven ware are made with toxic chemicals. When you’re choosing your cooking equipment, opt for glass, stainless steel, enamel or check out the fabulous range from NeoFlam Australia.

Food Storage
With food storage the major problem is plastics. Other than being terrible for our environment, many plastics are made with chemicals that have harsh effects on our body. It’s as simple as going back to glass! Often we are buying products in a glass jar and then, shock horror, throwing them away! These are perfect for food storage. My kitchen pantry and storage cupboard is full of different sized jars that provide us with most of our food storage needs.
Cleaning Products
Cleaning products that you use in your kitchen will somehow be absorbed into your food and drink. Dish-washing detergent residue is left on your dishes, oven cleaner remains in your oven, bench top cleaners stay on the bench, etc. All of these products have harmful chemicals in them that add to your toxic load, and can affect your short and long term health. A company like Australia’s EnviroCare Earth is a great place to start. This fabulous brand offers a natural product for everything you need in your home. They work, they’re sustainable, ethical, healthy for you and the environment, and run by two generations of a beautiful family in Western Australia. In summary making your kitchen toxin free is not going to happen overnight, but it will happen. Ha, I feel like I’ve heard that somewhere before. Take one step at a time. When you run out of a food, drink, cleaning product or anything in your kitchen, choose a natural option instead of your usual. You will begin to lower your toxic load, and help your body function optimally.
