The Beauty Benefits of Panthenol

How Panthenol Benefits Your Skin

If there is one skin care ingredient that everyone has heard of this would be Panthenol (also known as Provitamin B5). It’s in every beauty related TV ad, on every billboard and in every magazine. Panthenol is one of the most famous beautifying ingredients and it finds its place in the formulation of face creams, lotions, serums, hair care products, etc. – basically, anything you can think of. What all the fuss is about and why beauty companies love it so much? Let’s find out!

Deeply Moisturizes

Though panthenol is an alcohol form of vitamin B5 don’t be misled - this doesn’t mean it’s drying like regular alcohol (that you know you have to avoid, right? I mean in your skin care products – not in general). Alcohol in chemical terms means it has a specific functional group in its molecule that gives it certain qualities (here is where I want to end the chemistry class, because the least thing I want is to bore you). Not only panthenol doesn’t dry out your skin, it actually moisturizes it. And it does it really well. By acting as a humectant, panthenol attracts water from the environment to your skin, keeping it looking dewy and fresh. Well hydrated skin has better elasticity, is more firm and is  less likely to form wrinkles. We don’t want wrinkles, do we?

Reduces Scars

Panthenol penetrated the skin really well and once absorbed its being converted to pantothenic acid (vitamin B5). Panthenol promotes wound healing and formation of new tissue by stimulating a process called “fibroblast proliferation”. By speeding up the restorative processes, it reduces the chances of scar formation and preserves skin’s integrity.

Anti-Inflammatory & Irritation Reducing Properties

Because of its strong anti-inflammatory, soothing and regenerative properties, panthenol is widely used in treatments for conditions like eczema, atopic dermatitis and  acne vulgaris. For example, when it comes to treating atopic dermatitis, compared to hydrocortisone (common prescription medicine use to treat atopic dermatitis) panthenol has virtually no side effects and zero toxicity (while hydrocortisone has tons of unpleasant side effects + after prolonged use it causes irreversible skin changes). Sounds like a better options, doesn't it?

Panthenol’s anti-inflammatory effect makes it a good choice for people struggling with  acne. As a bonus it reduces sebum production, which means less clogged pores and less breakouts. Hooray for that!

Anti-Aging Benefits

Thanks to its wonderful moisturizing properties, panthenol is definitely ingredient-to-look-for when you are choosing daily moisturizer or nightly cream. Not only panthenol draws water to the skin, but it also improves skin’s barrier function, thus reduces water loss – double action to ensure your skin got all the water it needs. Once your skin has quenched its thirst, you can be sure the chances of you getting fine lines and wrinkles are reduced immediately.

Another annoying problem associated with age that panthenol can help with is  hyperpigmentation – several studies have shown that topical application of panthenol containing products for several weeks evens the skin tone, lightens the dark spots and improves the overall skin condition. What not to love about panthenol!?
